World Oceans Week at The Explorers Club is presented by the Rolex Perpetual Planet Initiative.
Our iconic Headquarters in New York City has been transformed into an undersea oasis. Featuring artists and explorers from all over the world, our HQ showcased up-cycled plastic, natural fiber fashion, and field artifacts, from June 1 – 5, 2026.
The 2026 Oceans Exhibit is made possible through the generosity of Schmidt Marine Technology Partners.

Ethereal Garden – Mariko Kusumoto
“I am deeply inspired by sea creatures, plants, and the microscopic world—diatoms, cells, and other intricate forms of nature. I have always been fascinated by the systematic patterns and organically formed structures found in the natural world, and I continue to be moved by its endless beauty and complexity. The ocean is an endless source of mystery and wonder.

Memoria del Litoral – Alejandra Parra Parodi
Memory of the Littoral is a collection rooted in the living knowledge of iraca palm weaving — a craft carried for generations by the artisan women of Usiacurí, a small community on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, in the department of Atlántico, close to where the land dissolves into the sea. The collection was created in collaboration with Marelys Escalante, master weaver and leading expert in iraca palm craftsmanship from Usiacurí. This dual methodology is an artistic expression shaped by four hands and two minds, a dialogue between a designer and a weaver, between New York and the Caribbean littoral, between the body and the material memory it carries.

Beebe & Barton’s Bathysphere
Generously loaned to The Explorers Club by WCS, this life-size plaster cast of William Beebe and Otis Barton’s bathysphere has been stopping traffic all Week. In the 1930s, Otis Barton designed and engineered the 5,000 pound cast iron Bathysphere to carry Barton and naturalist William Beebe to observe ocean life. In 1934, Barton and Beebe set off in the 5-foot diameter submersible with only two 8-inch fused quartz portholes to a record depth of 3,028 feet, carrying Flag 23.

Great White Shark Jaw
This museum-quality replica of a Great White Shark jaw was made after an almost 20-foot Great White Shark was caught in San Diego, California. After fastidiously examining the teeth placement, the replicator cast a replica of the jaw bone and placed each tooth in the plaster cast.
On loan to The Explorers Club by Jon F. Dodd, FN’23.
Thank you to Josh Bernstein FN’04 for modeling!

Regenerating Coral Reefs
This miniature reef, built from 3D-printed clay modules, visualizes the reef habitat regeneration approach developed by Explorers Club Fellow and EC50 2025 Dr. Ulrike Pfreundt and her team in Switzerland. The stackable modules replicate natural complexity at all scales to support maximum biodiversity. Data from four countries over multiple years show the return of 4000-15000 young coral per 100 square meters, and an increase in fish biomass of two- to tenfold in just the first year, with abundant invertebrates inside the modules.

Baby Shug – Cindy Pease Roe
Made by artist Cindy Pease Roe, this baby shark is made of 100% plastic marine debris, collected by the CCS Beach Brigade at the Cape Cod National Seashore.
