We are excited to share that at the most recent Board of Directors Meeting held on January 11, 2025, Mr. Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen was appointed to The Explorers Club Board of Trustees.
Mikkel joined The Explorers Club as a Member National in 2022, and was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2022. He has been an avid supporter of the Club’s mission, actively funding the Explorers Club Annual Dinners (ECAD) and other major events. Mikkel opened Climate Week 2024 at The Explorers Club with a speech on the critical intersection of climate change and media, showcasing his thought leadership in addressing global challenges.
In 2022, Sceye was selected for a flag mission and carried flag #210 on their High Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) for the first ever full diurnal flight in the stratosphere while staying over an area of operation. This mission represented a breakthrough towards creating geostationary satellites below orbital altitude, and building an entirely new layer of infrastructure between drones and satellites. The ability to stay in the stratosphere for months or years over an area of operation offers a unique vantage point for detecting climate disasters in real time like wildfires and methane leaks, as well as providing connectivity to the billions of unconnected, which conventional infrastructures cannot serve. The flag will be retired at ECAD 2025 in April.
Mikkel shared his enthusiasm about joining the Board of Trustees. “It’s an honor to join The Explorers Club in this capacity and contribute in my own way to pioneering exploration and addressing global challenges,” he said. “I look forward to working with the Club to empower the next generation of explorers, drive meaningful change, and continue to amplify positive impact.”

Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen, a philanthropic entrepreneur and humanitarian, is known for his groundbreaking contributions at the intersection of climate and health. As the founder of public health companies, LifeStraw and Vestergaard, he created life-saving solutions around fresh drinking water and infectious diseases that, among others, helped reduce global malaria deaths by over half. For this work, Mikkel was made an elder by the Luhya tribe of Western Kenya, a rare honor given to foreigners who have had an immense impact on their lives. Mikkel’s visionary leadership has earned dozens of humanitarian, innovation, and design awards for his commitment to creating a healthier, more equitable world.
