Dear Members,
The Explorers Club’s official, Members Only mobile app will launch next Wednesday, November 12.
Designed by Members, for Members – the new Explorers Club App will connect our global membership like never before. Whether you’re in New York, Nairobi, or New South Wales, you’re now one tap away from fellow explorers.
It takes a village, or an entire Club, to create an app, but several people are deserving of large thanks. First and foremost, this never would have been possible without the generous support of Michael Tennenbaum, MN’13, whose vision and consistency has led to a new Club website, and now, our first mobile app.
Built on the back of our famous old member roster, legendary work of the late Sweeney Medalist Lee Langan MED’99, the primary goal of our new app is to enable you to find other members of the Club.
Just like the roster, privacy and data security is paramount – you’ll be able to opt into sharing your contact information with other members.
To help identify yourself, and to best query the skills of your fellow members, President Emeritus Richard Garriott, LM’98, suggested a system that allows members to tag themselves with up to eight Exploration Specialities, which are then searchable by others.
Feedback from Jeremy Hirschhorn, MN’14, and Marc Bryan-Brown, MR’95, of the Membership committee were key to the development process, and led to the implementation of a digital membership card, a record of all reciprocal clubs, and a consolidated list of member benefits.
I’d also like to thank David Isserman, LM’02, for his overarching guidance in modernizing the Club’s data infrastructure and digital footprint, plus his initial work to find our longtime developers at Adchitects. Thanks also to Barbara Doran, MR’15, for her foresight and budgetary wizardry. To our beta testers, thank you for your time and feedback, catching mission-critical bugs.
When you want to update your mailing address or phone number, you’ll no longer have to email our membership department. By changing your information in the app, you’ll update your contact information in our database, a system architectured by our most recent Sweeney Medalist Alex Wallace, MED’01.
Nancy McGee, FN’13, and our Chapter Chairs ensured that members can also see the entire roster of each Chapter, allowing you to connect with explorers near you and near your future expedition locations.
Lastly, I’d like to thank the Club’s staff, who have long heard the Members’ frustration in finding one another. Their diligent work has built this incredible service to the Membership, and I know they are already working on version 2.0 to launch early next year, with a list of additional features the Members have long yearned for.
To ensure the privacy of all members, you’ll only be able to log into the app on one device at a time, ideally your primary mobile device. Members now have a single username and password which works for both the App and the Members-only area of the website – and now, once a year, the App will prompt you to pay your dues, right over your phone.
Make sure you’re ready for launch day by checking your password at explorers.org and clicking login in the upper right hand corner, finding your favorite exploration profile pictures, and brainstorming how you might tag your exploration specialities.
To all of our members, thank you for supporting the greatest Club on Earth. I can’t wait for our app to become yours next week.
Regards,

Richard Wiese
President, The Explorers Club
