Where art meets the unknown.

The Fine Arts Field Grant by Society Awards pairs artists with recipients of The Explorers Club Impact Grant — scientists, researchers, and adventurers actively working in the field. Selected artists will join real expeditions to some of the world’s most remote and extraordinary environments, creating original work inspired by what they find along the way.

About the grant

Throughout history, artists have traveled alongside explorers — sketching on deck, painting in tents, capturing in pigment what science captured in data. The work they brought home changed how the world saw itself.

The Fine Arts Field Grant revives that tradition. We are looking for painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, and practitioners of any fine arts discipline who are ready to take their practice somewhere unexpected — and bring something back.

This program is made possible by Society Awards and David Moritz, AN’15, and their belief in exploration, innovation, and beautifying our world.

Who should apply

We welcome applications from fine artists at any career stage whose practice would be genuinely transformed by expedition experience. You do not need to be an Explorers Club member to apply.

What we’re looking for

  • A strong, distinctive body of fine arts work
  • A genuine connection between your practice and the spirit of exploration
  • The curiosity, flexibility, and resilience that field work demands

What recipients will do

Grant recipients will be matched with an Impact Grant expedition suited to their artistic interests and geographic affinities. Following their expedition, artists will produce a body of work and exhibit at The Explorers Club — sharing what they witnessed with our membership, our partners, and the public.

How to apply

Applications are open now and are reviewed on a rolling basis.
