Trevor Wallace - 2018 Pearlman Field Award Recipient

“Truly I am honored by this. It is hard to put into words how meaningful this is to me and the project. I write to you from the yurt in Siberia nearing the end of my expedition after three and a half months of living in the wild and excavating the tomb. This year has had many challenges that have slowed our progress due to weather, injuries, and the fact that our one tomb turned out to be an entire necropolis of many burials to uncover, so the support to return is incredible. With the help of the Pearlman we will be able to document the discoveries in the coming field season we have worked so hard to achieve.”

In the summer of 2017, Trevor Wallace carried Explorers Club Flag #134 to Siberia, where he and a team of archaeologists were the first to document Tunnug-1, the oldest Scythian royal tomb ever found. For this discovery, Trevor was honored with our 2018 “New Explorer Award” alongside Dr. Gino Caspari.

Trevor has also done three investigative and field research expeditions with Caspari, capturing their search for Scythian tombs and the black market antiquities trade in their feature documentary, “Frozen Corpses, Golden Treasures”.

The 2018 Scott Pearlman Field Award of $10,000 supported the second field campaign of the excavation, Tunnug Campaign 2, which uncovered the inner burial chambers of the Royal Tomb. The first field campaign has been progressing steadily with the excavation of the periphery and secondary burials in the Republic of Tuva, Russia. The project is also affiliated with the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Scott Pearlman was a photographer and a member of three flag expeditions. One of the youngest members of The Explorers Club at the age of 22, he backpacked with his camera across Australia, Africa, South America, and Europe until contracting Hepatitis C. He died of liver failure at the age of 38, still looking for the perfect picture.

The Scott Pearlman Field Award is an Explorers Club Grant Program.
