Public Lecture Series with Dr. Evon Hekkala of AMNH

Time Travelling with Ancient DNA from Caves, Cabinets and Crocodiles

Natural History Museums are unique venues of exploration, documentation and discovery.

For over three decades, scientists have used ancient DNA recovered from long dead specimens in drawers and on display to piece together the stories of diverse lineages of life on earth.

Now, with modern breakthroughs in sequencing technology, they are uncovering species’ unique histories with some surprising discoveries, as ancient genomes are revealing new and unexpected patterns.

Dr. Evon Hekkala is an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Fordham University and a Research Associate at American Museum of Natural History. She is a geneticist, and an expert on crocodiles.

In this lecture, she will share her own unexpected adventures in discovery as she recounts tales from her expeditions into museum collections, underwater caves and ancient Egyptian tombs and how they reveal the surprising story of these aquatic reptiles.

Using DNA from crocodile mummies, extinct species and from hundreds of other old dead things (including century old frogs, lizards, chipmunks and leopards), she explores mysteries of the past and what they might tell us about the future.

Her research has been featured in popular science venues such as NPR, The New York Times, Discovery, New Scientist, Nature, Science, The Atlantic and Forbes along with “salon” style events including Secret Science Club and SciCafé.

Video work includes a tour of the “Crocs! Ancient Predators in a Modern World” exhibit via Facebook in the “Shelf-Life” series at AMNH and the program “Man-eaters of Madagascar” on National Geographic series “Out There”.
