EC Film Series: Watershed

The Explorers Club cordially invites you to screening of WATERSHED, a new film executive produced and narrated by Robert Redford, and produced by his son, James Redford, The Redford Center and Kontent Films. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Mark Decena.

WATHERSHED explores a new potential ethic for water-stressed areas of the American West. In order to raise awareness of the crisis Redford teamed with his son James to produce an environmental documentary focused on the plight of the Colorado River system.

"The watershed issue is something that's happening all over the world, where the need for water is greater than the amount of water to provide for it," said Redford; "We're picking the Colorado River as an example of what's going on with watersheds all over the world."

Spanning over 1,400 miles, the Colorado River travels through seven U.S. states, serving some 40 million people in and around the watershed. While the flow ends in the Gulf of California, most of the water never makes it that far due to demands from irrigation, reservoirs and municipal use. The population in the region is expected to reach 50 million by 2050 and with temperatures rising and precipitation patterns becoming more erratic, demand will inevitably outpace supply in region.

Can we meet the needs of a growing population in the face of rising temperatures and lower rainfall in an already arid land? Can we find harmony among the competing interests of cities, agriculture, industry, recreation, wildlife, and indigenous communities with rights to the water?
