All members are invited to submit their interest for involvement in the governance of our esteemed Club and we encourage qualified participants to apply. Below, you will find the necessary information and instructions for submitting candidate credentials to the Nominating Committee for the position of Director. The timeline for submission and word count must be followed by all candidates in order to be considered.

In accordance with Club bylaws, all members have the right to take part in our Club’s governance by nominating themselves and/or other members as candidates for a three-year term on The Explorers Club Board of Directors. To be considered for the Board of Director’s Class of 2025 Slate of Candidates, all candidates must be members in good standing and must fall into one of the following membership categories: Fellow, Member, Medalist, Honorary, Life and Emeritus. All candidates must also must be members in good standing. Other member categories are not eligible to run for a position on the Board. In order to be nominated, a candidate must meet all other requirements outlined in The Explorers Club Bylaws. Candidates should verify they meet the requirements of the Bylaws before submitting their nomination.

The Board Director nomination process has three parts:

  • Step 1, Due by Nov. 1, 2021. Submission of your Biographical Sketch and Candidate Statement in accordance to the outline below. All candidates must be in “good standing” before submission to the Nominating Committee.
  • Step 2, Due by Dec. 1, 2021. Applicants will be required to complete an application and a questionnaire concerning conflict of interest, prior involvement in the Club and demonstrate basic knowledge about The Explorers Club Bylaws.
    • Additionally, all candidates shall submit information for a background check including your social security number or foreign equivalent (handled confidentially by a 3rd party professional vendor).
  • Step 3, At the January 2021 Board of Directors Meeting, the Nominating Committee, after having reviewed each candidate, will recommend a slate of candidates for the five (5) open positions on the Board of Directors.
  • The approved Slate of Candidates will be sent out to the Membership who will vote for the five open Director positions.
    • The results of the Board of Directors election will be reported at the 2022 Annual Business Meeting of the Club.

 


 

Biographical Sketch (400-word maximum)

This sketch should note at the outset the candidate’s chapter (or New York resident) affiliation and details concerning one’s present occupation, including key institutional affiliations, particularly those involving not-for-profit entities. It should also include the candidate’s exploration/field science credentials and any Flag expeditions they have taken part in. It is suggested that the candidate consider the “Attributes Desired of a Potential Director” when composing this sketch.

Incumbents running for a second Board term should enumerate their contributions to The Explorers Club during their first three-year term as a Director, with regard to verifiable fund-raising, or in-kind support, and specific contributions to the Club as a loyal, working Director and board-team member.

Responding to the questions posed below, these brief statements are intended to describe the vision of the candidate for the current and future direction of the Club, and how they could help implement that vision.

  • Please describe your work on behalf of The Explorers Club at the Chapter, National, International or Committee level in the past two years.
    • Please tell us about other ways you have contributed to the Club, such as supporting Club functions and events.
  • Please tell us about other ways you have contributed to the Club, such as supporting Club functions and events. How would your position on the Board positively impact our fundraising or revenue stream?
  • What marketing and public relations experience have you had?
  • If you have prior board or officer experiences, in what capacity did you serve on other not-for-profit Boards? What were your accomplishments?
  • Please describe your approach to conflict resolution, and how you would evaluate and resolve issues impacting the Club.
