Join The Explorers Club on Monday, January 22nd for a screening of WindShipped, an inspirational short film that follows Captain Sam Merrett and the crew of the 65-foot schooner Apollonia as they attempt to replicate an older, slower, and more sustainable method of cargo transportation: shipping goods up and down the Hudson River using nothing but the wind and the sun.

Captain Sam Merrett has seen a dream come to the life as his 65-foot, metal-hulled sail freight boat, ‘The Apollonia,’ has successfully completed three seasons delivering cargo – largely malt, grain, corn, pumpkins and red oak – from Hudson to New York City and back without burning fossil fuels, using only the wind and sun to propel and navigate.

Explorers Club member and filmmaker Jon Bowermaster and his Oceans 8 Films team followed the progress of rebuilding the boat, with filming began at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, in May 2020. That Sam’s quixotic vision would be successful was never guaranteed, especially in the contemporary marketplace where everything is expected overnight or faster. Sam’s way, by sail-power, takes a purposely slower view, if just as efficient. Today, the Apollonia is the only sail-freight boat operating in United States waters.

This event will include a screening of the 40 minute film, followed by a discussion with the director and crew.

Streaming live here on explorers.org, our YouTube Channel, and our Facebook Live — Monday, January 22nd at 7:00 pm ET.
