Where the Forest Roars: Asian Elephants from Conflict to Coexistence along the Eastern Himalaya

Join The Explorers Club on Monday, February 12th to learn about the complex, and often deadly, relationship between humans and wild Asian elephants in the Eastern Himalayan region – and the steps being taken towards a peaceful coexistence.

While issues involving African elephants are widely known, stories of interactions between wild Asian elephants and humans receive far less attention. Currently, there is an intense conflict raging between humans and elephants throughout India, but the conflict is particularly acute in the remote foothills of the Himalaya, at the intersection of India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan. Each year, a disproportionate number of  humans and elephants are killed in northern West Bengal, a biodiverse and politically charged hot spot just three-quarters the size of Long Island, within sight of Kanchenjunga.

Explorers Club Fellow Kim Frank has spent six years living and working with stakeholders to try to bring awareness and find solutions to this intense conflict. Her work has resulted in four international publications, a book, and now a new documentary in development entitled “Where the Forest Roars.” Join The Explorers Club on Monday, February 12th, to learn more about this hidden and fascinating story, as Kim tries to help bring conflict to co-existence.

Kim’s work on Where the Forest Roars has been done in part with Explorers Club Members Jeremy La Zelle FN’19, Avijan Saha (EC50 2021), and Trevor Wallace MN’13.
