Dr. Rebecca Foote
Rebecca Foote is the Director of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Research for the Royal Commission for AlUla in Saudi Arabia (RCU). She brings decades of experience in leading archaeological projects and further endeavours revealing the material culture of the MENA region and making its heritage accessible to various audiences.
Rebecca’s current role focuses on executing in-depth archaeological study unique in both geographical size and scale, assessing the rich and complex past of the AlUla region of northwest Saudi Arabia. Dr Foote develops archaeological surveys, excavations and research projects with national and international expert teams to expand understanding of AlUla’s history and prehistory. She supports conservation of AlUla’s standing and excavated architectural remains as well as contributes to planning, master planning, cultural planning and tourism departmental initiatives to realise AlUla as a ‘living museum’, a major heritage destination, and a benefit to the local community as a part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
Before joining the Royal Commission for AlUla, Rebecca’s work in the archaeology of the Arab world focused on analysing and assessing water management in pre- and early Islamic eras and commercial architecture (suqs) in early Islamic cities, as well as co-directing the Humayma Excavation Project, which revealed a once vibrant Nabataean-Islamic settlement in southern Jordan.
As a product of her successes in archaeology and early Islamic studies and her academic formation as an Islamic art and architectural historian, Rebecca also directed the Islamic Art Society in London, supporting the development of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, curating exhibitions and publishing catalogues for the National Council for Culture, Arts and Heritage of Qatar. Dr Foote was Head of Publications for the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art in London as well.
In addition, she served as Visiting Professor at Brown University and Teaching Fellow at Harvard University, where she taught courses on archaeology, art and architecture. Dr Foote earned her PhD and MA at Harvard University.
