On Jan. 21, The Explorers Club’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee will co-host a Society of Forgotten Explorers event with OER Project. The mission of the OER (Open Educational Resources) Project is to provide free, high-quality, online social studies curricula, including World History and Big History, for middle and high school students.
The primary audience for this virtual event will be history teachers nationwide who are interested in innovative ways of engaging with students, including teaching them about fascinating but unknown explorers from antiquity. The event is free and open to Explorers Club members and anyone interested in learning about the achievements of forgotten explorers.
The speakers will be TEC members: Denis Belliveau will introduce Muslim explorer Ibn Battuta; Marcin Jamkowski will discuss 13th century friar Benedict the Pole; and Nainoa Thompson will present Micronesian navigator Mau Piailug. The session will be moderated by J. Robert Harris, the DEI Chair.
Virtual event begins at 7:00PM Eastern Time.
