In 2021, China announced the creation of the country’s first 5 national parks. Now, the Chinese government plans to create at least 45 more parks by 2035 and claims it will be the world’s largest national park system. These parks focus on preserving biodiversity and connecting massive swaths of habitat and wildlife corridors across the country, but how do they affect the people already living there and reflect a positive upgrade from the county’s pre-existing 2,750 nature reserves? Join The Explorers Club on Monday, May 22nd to gain an inside look into this historic moment and what is next to come.
In this lecture, photographer, filmmaker, and writer Kyle Obermann will present his stories, photos, and research from living and traveling throughout China for the last 10 years working with some of the country’s most endangered species and active domestic conservation groups in some of the most remote and spectacular places on the planet. The lecture will provide a behind-the-scenes look into one of the most undiscussed and misunderstood conservation topics of our time: how the world’s most populous and fourth most biodiverse nation is managing the balance between people and wildlife as it heads through the 21st Century.
Streaming live here on explorers.org, our YouTube Channel, and our Facebook Live — Monday, May 22nd at 7:00 pm ET.
This will be an in-person lecture at Explorers Club Headquarters.
In-person tickets are $15 for Members, and $30 for the General Public.
Check-in will begin at 6:00 pm, with a beer and wine reception from 6:00 – 7:00 pm
