The first episode of The 2022 Explorers 50 Speaker Series, supported by Rolex, kicks-off on Wednesday, October 12th at 7pm with “Visionaries”. This episode brings together experts from around the world and from various disciplines who have explored some of our world’s harshest climates, from icey tundras to frozen seas and field sites without sun. The panel discussion will be moderated by EC 50 Chair Joe Rohde and contemplate the very reason why explorers go to the extremes that they so often do. Tune in to learn about the ways these explorers are inspiring the world to care about far-off places.
This event is entirely virtual. Streaming live here on explorers.org, our YouTube Channel, and our Facebook Live — Wednesday, October 12th at 7:00 pm ET.
Wilson Wai Yin Cheung
Wilson Cheung is an active polar explorer, glaciologist and alpinist, accumulating > 1000 days of field experience in the Alpine and polar regions. With his wealth of experience and research background in remote wilderness, he has been committed to raising public awareness of the rapidly changing polar and alpine regions.
Ignacio Oficialdegui
Ignacio Oficialdegui is a polar explorer who uses wind and sun (instead of fossil fuel for energy) to explore and navigate the most remote, pristine and hostile regions of Antarctica and Greenland. He has spent 25 years prospecting invisible winds on six continents and in more than seventy countries, amounting to 14.000 kilometers of polar ice traveled.
His expeditions have taken him to the North Pole, three crossings of Antarctica and one crossing of Greenland. By collaborating with more than a dozen international scientific organizations, Ignacio has validated polar wind highways, sailing in the ingenious windsled.
Sunniva Sorby
History making Polar Ambassador, Author and Explorer Sunniva Sorby has over 25 years in the polar regions as historian, naturalist guide and educator. She is an advocate for protecting the Arctic and Antarctic through storytelling, citizen science, youth engagement and visual inspiration through a global project “Hearts in the Ice” that she co-created with Hilde Falun Strom .
Sunniva was part of the first all-woman team to ski to the South Pole in 1993 along with fellow Explorer club member Ann Bancroft as the expedition leader. Sunniva has had many notable firsts under her belt but the most powerful project she has engaged in has been Hearts in the Ice -which is all about shining a light on the changes that the polar regions are facing under the needle eye of climate change and the power of collaboration to problem solve the climate crisis.
