Join us on Monday November 4th for a special Veterans Day Public Lecture celebrating the USS BEAR in word and song, featuring the Cadet Glee Club of the United States Coast Guard Academy. The BEAR is the most famous ship associated with the Explorers Club and the Coast Guard: this lecture will explore BEAR’s storied service through choral performances by Coast Guard Academy Cadets. This lecture is part of the Explorers Club’s Military and Veterans Initiative.
The USS Bear was an early steam-powered icebreaker ship, operated by the United States Revenue Cutter Service, and later the Coast Guard. The ship’s history is deeply entwined with the history of The Explorers Club – in 1884, the Bear was one of the three ships to rescue the survivors of the ill-fated Lady Franklin Bay expedition, including expedition leader and first president of The Explorers Club Adolphus Greely. Years later, in 1933, the Bear served as the expedition ship for legendary club member Richard Byrd’s Second Antarctic Expedition.
This in-person event at the Explorers Club Headquarters will include an audience Q&A.
Streaming live here on explorers.org, our YouTube Channel, and our Facebook Live — Monday, November 4th at 7:00 pm ET.
