Adam Maire, MN’24 and Christine West, FN’23

From the Arctic to Antarctica: Using Exploratory Diving to Connect the Five Oceans

Mr. Maire is passionate about finding extraordinary ways to help others understand the links between the worlds that exist both above and below the surface of the ocean. Spending six months per year in the field, Mr. Maire works to educate people about the power and importance of the earth’s wild places, their history and the incredible creatures that inhabit them.

Ms. West strives to share stories and behaviors in a memorable way to create connections between people and the ocean.

Ms. West’s dedication to ocean education, exploration and safety continually pushes her to dive the coldest, sometimes murkiest and most remote areas on the planet. Using a variety of tools such as underwater cameras, drones and ROVs, she documents a species’ presence and abundance.

Martin Broen, MR’23

Witnesses to Extinction – Caves as an Archive of Adaptation, Collapse and Warning

Mr. Broen is a design and systems innovation leader, award-winning conservation photographer and cave diver using photography as a tool for conservation, connecting the lessons preserved in the fossil record with accelerating environmental changes.

For more than a decade, Mr. Broen explored and photographed the flooded cave systems of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, helping connect cave systems and photographing close to 400 cenotes; preserving evidence of extinct megafauna, records of ancient climate, early human presence and ritual activity.

Harry Roecker, MN’25

A Warbird Casualty Off New Jersey - the Discovery and Story of a Lost F4U Corsair

Mr. Roecker is an engineer with a career in the inspection, repair and design of bridges including some of the largest and oldest bridges in the U.S.

Diving the coast of New Jersey, Delaware and New York, Mr. Roecker’s engineering background, coupled with a strong interest in history and early technologies helps to understand and share with others the dynamics of undersea historical sites.

His diving has spanned from the Roman harbors of Caesarea, Israel to Revolutionary War shipwrecks at Chestnut Neck, New Jersey.

Jeff Lindsay

Shipwrecks and Subterranean Seas: A Photographer's Journey Into The Unseen

Growing up on the shores of the Great Lakes fostered a natural curiosity about the unexplored for Mr. Lindsay; leading to a lifelong desire to visit and photograph the unknown and forgotten and later – an almost limitless number of nearby shipwrecks.

Mr. Lindsay has been invited on numerous projects as team photographer around the world as well as being a keynote speaker at Diving Talks, Portugal and DivExpo, Antwerp. His biggest thrill is still visiting a shipwreck or cave and capturing some small part of its essence in a photograph.

Jason M. Patlis

Redefining the Aquarium of the 21st Century: A Place Where Everyone Creates Their Sea Story

Mr. Patlis is President and CEO of the Maritime Aquarium of Norwalk and has nearly 40 years of experience in nonprofit management, environmental law and public policy across domestic and international work in both public and private sectors. He previously held leadership roles at the Wildlife Conservation Society, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund.

Mr. Patlis advanced laws and policies to sustainably manage natural resources and endangered species and served as Deputy Staff Director for the House Science Committee and Majority Counsel on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

A Fulbright Senior Scholar, he is widely published in law and policy journals and received his J.D. from Cornell University School of Law and his B.A. from Haverford College.
