Science on the Fly unites the fly fishing community and river scientists to study, protect, and restore rivers around the world. Started in 2019 as a project between Woodwell Climate Research Center and Fishpond, Science on the Fly strategically engages the enthusiastic and passionate fly fishing community around the world to serve as community scientists for monthly river data collection and observations. These data collected allow researchers to increase the number of rivers that are subject to long-term studies of water quality and watershed health, improve understanding of how watersheds and river systems change over time due to climate change, as well as help make an impact when creating or enforcing policies on our watersheds. With a growing list of partners and supporters, including community scientists and fly fishing lodges around the world, these scientists aim to bridge the gap between science and public policy and inspire a broad community of river stewards to take ownership of that process.

Dr. Holmes is a widely cited earth scientist who has co-founded and led multiple large river research networks, including Global Rivers Observatory, Arctic Great Rivers Observatory, Cape Cod Rivers Observatory, and Science on the Fly, an initiative that unites the fly-fishing and science communities to study and protect rivers around the world.
Allie Cunningham
Allie is the Director of Science on the Fly and a Research Assistant for Woodwell Climate Research Center. She was the first community scientist for the Science on the Fly program in 2019, leading the charge of sampling the San Miguel River around Telluride, Colorado and helping to grow the program to what it is today. She believes that involving other fly-fishing enthusiasts in water sampling helps foster a connection between anglers and their environment, encouraging them to act as stewards for the rivers in which they fish. Allie previously worked in field research for water quality monitoring around mine tailing reclamation sites, river restoration projects, and teaching fly fishing around Telluride, Colorado. She is also an avid angler and outdoorswoman who has led and participated in wilderness trips in remote regions around the US and parts of Tanzania.
