Join The Explorers Club and Dr. Mireya Mayor on Monday, September 16th, to hear about her unorthodox path to becoming a world-renowned scientist and popular TV host, with a behind-the-scenes look at her career.

The glamorous explorer will recount her near-death experiences in the Congo, discovering the world’s smallest primate in Madagascar, trekking across Africa with three companions in the footsteps of Stanley and Livingstone with nothing but a compass, a few maps, and Stanley’s original journals, as well as her real-life drama, juggling a family of eight!

Dr Mayor, dubbed the female Indiana Jones, will share stories of her current search through the backwoods of North America for evidence of the legendary apelike creature known as Bigfoot, starring in Discovery Channel’s current hit, Expedition Bigfoot.

Behind all of her work as a global advocate for the natural world and her modern family are Mireya’s core values and beliefs. Join her and The Explorers Club on September 16th for a reminder that we are all connected, and nobody should give up on their own dreams of exploration.

This in-person event at the Explorers Club Headquarters will include an audience Q&A.

Speakers

Dr. Mireya Mayor

Hailed by The New York Times as “The Female Indiana Jones” and referred to as “Her Wildness”—Dr. Mayor is a world-renowned primatologist, author, explorer, and Emmy Award winning TV host. As National Geographic’s first female wildlife correspondent, Dr. Mayor has hosted dozens of documentaries, including her own Nat Geo Wild! Series, Wild Nights with Mireya Mayor, and Mark Burnett’s Expedition Africa for History Channel and currently stars in Discovery Channel’s hit series, Expedition Bigfoot.  But the former NFL cheerleader, daughter of Cuban immigrants, and mother of six, is not your typical scientist.

A Fulbright Scholar and Explorers Club Fellow, Dr. Mayor is known for exploring the most remote regions of the earth in search of elusive, rare and little-known animals. Her explorations have led to several scientific discoveries, most notably her discovery in Madagascar of the world’s smallest primate, a brand new species to science.

Dr. Mayor is the founder of Her Wildness Foundation, a non-profit focused on conservation efforts, and highlighting the contributions and roles of women in the frontlines protecting some of the most endangered animals on Earth. She is also the Executive Director of Strategic Projects at Florida International University where she also teaches science communications to help scientists better tell their stories. She is also the author of the best-selling book, Pink Boots and a Machete, and the subject of the award-winning children’s book, Just Wild Enough.
