New England Chapter: Island Creek Oysters Farm Tour
The New England Chapter of The Explorers Club
World Oceans Day Event
Your ISLAND CREEK OYSTERS FARM TOUR starts where the oysters do: in Island Creek’s hatchery! See how they recreate the ideal conditions for oysters to reproduce and learn the stages of growing algae (oyster food). Next, you’ll head outside to the nursery (their land-based upweller system) where their team monitors tiny oysters through a period of exponential growth before they are big enough to be planted out in the Bay…your next stop! Their Captain will guide you out on the water aboard the Nathaniel Winsor, their 27-foot Carolina Skiff, for an up-close look at the heart of what they do. They’ll share oyster tales over drinks, toss back some oysters, and soak up the sun. If you’re up for it, they will even teach you to shuck your own. PRO TIP: add caviar! Following the tour, you’ve got a table reserved for your party back on dry land. Eat more oysters and stay for the view. One thing is consistent at Island Creek: nothing stays the same. So, whether you’ve taken a tour before or not, come see firsthand what they’re up to.

WHY:
The UN General Assembly designated June 8th as World Oceans Day in 2008.
The official goals of World Oceans Day:
- Raise awareness of the oceans’ roles in our lives.
- Celebrate our connection to the sea.
- Raise awareness of how people can help protect the ocean.
- Highlight the challenges facing the oceans.
- Encourage people to interact with the oceans in a sustainable manner.
- Mobilize the world’s population to sustainably manage the world’s oceans.
HOW:
Wear comfortable shoes that you are okay getting a little wet. Boots are not necessary, but the hatchery floor and boat can be a bit wet. For clothing, bring a layer for the boat. The hatchery will be quite warm; however, with New England’s weather, having an extra layer for the boat might come in handy! It’s a farm, so dress is casual!
BRING YOUR OWN BOAT BEVERAGES:
You are welcome to bring your own waters and soft drinks for the boat portion of the tour. This is ONLY for the boat. Island Creek is happy to store any bags and coolers at the check in! No picnics are permitted on the premises.
A CHANCE TO MEET AND VISIT OVER LUNCH:
Following the tour at 1:00pm, walk across the street to Island Creek’s Winsor House where a table has been reserved for us. Winsor House offers many seafood and non-seafood options. Individuals will be responsible for paying for their own lunch bills.
LUNCHTIME BONUS
Distinguished professor, Director of the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire, and legendary Explorers Club Fellow Larry Mayer, has kindly agreed to give us a brief overview of his upcoming icebreaker trip over the top of Greenland.
This event is now SOLD OUT.
