Join The Explorers Club on Monday, October 23rd to hear from Mongolian paleontologist, National Geographic Explorer, and Explorers Club 50 awardee Dr. Bolortsetseg Minjin about fossils of the Gobi Desert, the repatriation of stolen dinosaur bones, and how science education can build a better future.
In 1923, fossilized dinosaur eggs were discovered for the first time by explorer Roy Chapman Andrews in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. Over the next century, Mongolia and the Gobi have become known as a hotbed of dinosaur fossils. The sheer number of fossils found, and the quality they have been found in, are what lead UNSECO to term the region “largest dinosaur fossil reservoir in the world.” Despite this, paleontology education has been sorely lacking for many youth populations and communities across the country. Many specimens are illegally exported out of Mongolia and sold on auction or on the black market to high-end collectors in the United States and elsewhere.
During her lecture, Bolor will discuss the history of paleontology in Mongolia and its lingering shadow of colonialism. She will also look to the future, and describe her recent progress in returning stolen fossils and how community-centered museums will build a better future for Mongolian dinosaurs and remote towns in the Gobi desert.
Streaming live here on explorers.org, our YouTube Channel, and our Facebook Live — Monday, October 23rd at 7:00 pm ET.
This will be an in-person lecture at Explorers Club Headquarters.
In-person tickets are $15 for Members, and $30 for the General Public.
Check-in will begin at 6:00 pm, with a beer and wine reception from 6:00 – 7:00 pm
Bolortsetseg Minjin
Since 2012, Dr. Bolortsetseg (Bolor) Minjin has been integral in the return of over 70 illegally imported dinosaur fossils to Mongolia. She founded the Institute for the Study of Mongolian Dinosaurs in 2008, which aims to preserve Mongolia’s rich fossil heritage and promote scientific communication and outreach to Mongolian youth. Her organization drives a mobile museum across rural Mongolia, reaching underserved populations. She is currently leading a project to build a dinosaur museum in Mongolia.
