Join The Explorers Club this coming October 13th – 15th for the 2023 Lowell Thomas Awards Weekend!

Hosted by our intrepid Norwegian chapter in the vibrant metropolis of Oslo, this year’s Lowell Thomas is sure to be an extraordinary blend of classic Explorer’s Club camaraderie, breathtaking natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moments you won’t want to miss.

The Explorers Club has set aside a block of rooms at a special rate for LTAD guests at the Amerikalinjen Hotel in central Oslo.

LTAD ticket holders can use code GRPTEC for a 10% discount on pre-paid bookings through the hotel´s own website. Valid until the hotel is fully booked.

There are many more hotels nearby should you wish to explore options. It is recommended to stay in the Central Oslo, Jernbanetorget area, or West Oslo area to ensure venues and events are within easy reach.

TOUR OSLO’S HISTORIC ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY
|  17.00 – 18.30 (VIP Ticket holders only)

Gain unique access to the historic Astronomical Observatory in central Oslo. Mingle with fellow guests and learn the basics about astronavigation and how the old Norwegian explorers contributed to international science through astronomical and magnetic field observations. The session is held by one of Norway´s greatest science communicators, Explorers Club Fellow Vegard Rekaa.

COCKTAIL RECEPTION / WELCOME PARTY
19.00 – 22.00 (All ticket holders)

Kick off your weekend in Oslo with the Norway Chapter and fellow LTAD guests at Amerikalinjen Hotel at Jernbanetorget, close to Oslo Central Station. This is the former headquarters of the Norwegian America Line and continues to connect Oslo with New York.
Venue: Haven (The Garden)
Open to all LTAD ticket holders

Dresscode: Business casual

 

AWARDEE SYMPOSIUM 
|  9:30 – 12:15 (All ticket holders)

Meet the awardees and some of the prominent Norwegian members at Frogner Kino, historic cinema in Oslo. Coffee and waffles served.

WORKSHOPS
|  12:30 – 14:00 (VIP Ticket holders only)

VIP ticket holders are invited to a workshop with an esteemed Norwegian explorer. Gain practical skills and learn smart solutions from experienced explorers.
Learn about expedition safety and preparedness by learning how legendary polar explorer Børge Ousland plans out his repair kits. Or learn practical lifesaving techniques with extreme medicine expert Johannes Svensøy. Finally, join accomplished explorer and author Erling Kagge in conversation on how to turn the unique experiences of expeditions into stories that capture the same sense of adventure.
VIP ticket holders will be notified of location, group allocation and further details. Light lunch will be served.
Dresscode: Casual, no outdoor activity.

EVENING: LOWELL THOMAS AWARDS DINNER PROGRAM

All ticket holders.Transportation from city center to Bygdøy peninsula museums for reception and dinner venue.

KON-TIKI RECEPTION AND VISIT 
|17.00 – 18.00

Experience Thor Heyerdahl´s original Kon-Tiki raft, the reed boat RA II and artifacts from his many expeditions during this exclusive Explorers Club visit to the museum. Make big plans over the signature drink Kon-Tiki Landing.

FRAM & GJØA RECEPTION & DINNER 
18.00 – 01.00

We walk across the courtyard to the Fram, and continue the evening reception in, on, and around the polar ship Fram, used by both Nansen and Amundsen on their groundbreaking expeditions. Try Norwegian specialities and explore the ship. For dinner, we move across the courtyard to the polar ship Gjøa, the first ship to sail through the Northwest Passage. Dinner is served around the ship, and the afterparty continues in the Gjøa Hall.
If you did not see it all, or want to explore these museums further, you can visit them at any time during the weekend for free as an LTAD ticket holder.
Dress code: Black tie optional
The museum buildings are very large and may feel chilly to some.
Note on shoes: It is recommended to use shoes that allow you to go inside the Fram ship. Heels may be used, but Stilettos are not permitted on the polar ships.

 

Excursions in and around Oslo, including: 

Bookings for the Sunday program will open shortly and these excursions are not included in the LTAD ticket. Times are subject to adjustment, but indicates time of day of events.

SAIL ON THE HISTORIC RESCUE VESSEL CHRISTIANIA

Built by Colin Archer – who also constructed the polar ship Fram – in 1895, this rescue vessel has saved over 250 sailors and assisted almost 3000 vessels in her active service days, earning her the nickname “Storm Bird”. Today Christiania is in private ownership by an Explorers Club member. Join this unique opportunity to sail on an historic ship, one of only two of its kind still in existence.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES AT THE DALE OEN EXPERIENCE CENTER

Capacity: 20 (additional groups may be added)

Price: $80

Participate in ocean experiences with Dale Oen Experience, where you can explore the Oslofjord on and under water and see diverse marine life and learn about conservation efforts in action.

The Dale Oen Foundation offers programs in personal development, science, and alternative training arenas. By providing a different arena, the Dale Oen Foundation aims to build self-confidence through a focus on skills, joy, strengths and the ability to endure and reach personal goals.

EXCLUSIVE VISIT TO URANIENBORG, ROALD AMUNDSEN´S HOME

|  12:00 – 15:00

Capacity: 10 per group, additional groups of 10 may be added and visit after each other

Price: $90

In 1928, famous Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen left his home to go search for Nobile, who had gone missing on his expedition towards the North Pole. Amundsen never returned. Some years back the house was opened, and LTAD ticket holders can visit in small groups and experience his home, room by room, accompanied by an expert guide. Transportation to and from Oslo city center.

SAUNA BY THE OSLO FJORD

|  17:00 – 19:30

Capacity: 20

Price: $40

A sauna session at SALT is 2.5 hours with pure pleasure. Hot saunas, cold baths and cold drinks. Jump in the fjord for an invigorating swim.
