Homesick for a World Unknown: The Life of George B. Schaller
Join The Explorers Club for a glimpse into the life of one of the most legendary explorers and conservationists of the past century – Explorers Club Medalist George Schaller.
To celebrate publication of the first biography of preeminent field biologist George B. Schaller, winner of the 1990 Explorers Club Medal, author Miriam Horn will recount what she unearthed about the man who transformed our understanding of Earth’s wildest creatures and how to protect them—but rarely spoke or wrote a word about himself. Devoting nearly eight years to the project, Horn was the first to read a century of family correspondence as well as Schaller’s famous field journals: more than 20,000 pages kept daily over his seven decades living with mountain gorillas, tigers, lions, snow leopards, pandas, Tibetan bears – and those creatures’ human neighbors. Welcomed again and again into the Schaller home, she spent days and weeks interviewing George, his wife Kay and sons and siblings and cousins, plus colleagues in 16 countries; she also joined George on two of his final trips into the field, to India and Mexico.
This in-person event at the Explorers Club Headquarters will include an audience Q&A.

Miriam Horn
Miriam Horn is a bestselling author, environmental advocate, journalist, and filmmaker. Her previous books include Rebels in White Gloves, Earth: The Sequel (coauthor), and Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman. She produced two as documentary films, with one premiering at Sundance. Before turning to books, Horn worked at the Environmental Defense Fund and the US Forest Service, and wrote for magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times. She lives in Colorado, in the South San Juan Mountains.
