Calling all Explorer Cubs!

Winter is coming! This session, Explorer Cubs will explore some of our coldest climates, the North Pole and the South Pole, from headquarters! Explorer Cubs will not only learn about our planet’s extreme polar regions, but what the North and South Poles might be able to teach us about outer space.  We’ll be joined by polar experts Charlie Detelich, Veronica Hegelein, and Alexia Kubas!

  • When: Saturday December 14th, 10am-11:30am
  • Who: Young explorers ages 7-11 years old
  • Where: The Explorers Club
  • Cost: Free!

Please reserve one space per student. Adults are encouraged to stay but should not register.

Through fun and interactive sessions with field explorers, the Explorer Cubs Program aims to foster future citizens of the planet and strengthen the relationships between Explorers Club members, the community, and the next generation of change makers.

Save the date for and be on the lookout for more information about future sessions!

Speakers

Alexia Kubas

Alexia Kubas is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Astronomy Department at Cornell University. She researches periglacial processes on Earth and Ceres using geophysical, numerical modeling, and laboratory investigations. She has been to the Arctic twice for field work to study permafrost landforms called pingos.

Charlie Detelich

Charlie Detelich is an astronomy Ph.D. candidate at Cornell University specializing in the study of fractures in the icy shell of Jupiter’s moon Europa. Using computer simulations, Charlie investigates whether nutrients on Europa’s surface can reach its subsurface liquid water ocean, potentially increasing the moon’s astrobiological potential. They are also a science team member of NASA’s Europa Clipper mission, which launched in October and will begin its exploration of Europa in 2029.

Veronica Hegelein

Veronica Hegelein is a third year PhD student at Cornell University and her research interests fall at the intersection of oceanography, planetary science, and glaciology. She studies the oceanic cavities beneath ice shelves in Antarctica and Greenland using a remotely operated vehicle to learn more about ice-ocean interactions. This helps increase our understanding of polar environments on Earth and other planetary bodies in our solar system. Her field experience includes a research cruise as part of the Oceans Across Space and Time project and next spring she will be deploying to Greenland for nearly two months!
