Join The Explorers Club and the Breaking Barriers Committee on Friday, May 17th for a NYC premiere screening and panel discussion around PBS’s new adventure travel show “America: The Land We Live In”.  Produced by women-led World Life Productions, Writer/Director Devon Chivvis, Executive Producer Alicia Albee, and co-host of the show, Sophia Michelen are all also active Explorers Club members.

Join Devon Alicia, Sophia, and featured in-show character and low-country crabber, Tia Clark in a fun and informative discussion around the creation of the show, storytelling through exploration, and being successful women in historically male-dominated professions.

About America: The Land We Live In

“America: The Land We Live In” takes the audience along for the adventure as co-hosts Sophia Michelen and Scott “Doc” Varn head out on a modern-day treasure hunt to rediscover America’s national wonders. They’ll follow clues in the original text and artwork of a 19th century book called “Picturesque America” created over one-hundred fifty years ago when a group of daring explorers, artists and writers set out to discover the beauty of our land and cities and returned with intrepid tales and intricate engravings that would become the very first travel guide of America.

Today, Sophia and Doc will unveil mysteries, uncover age-old legends, and reignite the rich history of exploration and conservation in our country.  They’ll examine the “then and now” of each location across America while exploring the culture, history, and beauty of each place in the name of exploration and preservation.

This in-person screening at the Explorers Club Headquarters will include a panel conversation and audience Q&A.

Speakers

Devon Chivvis

Devon Chivvis, Executive Producer and Writer/Director of World Life Productions is a visual storyteller who steers the creative direction of WLP’s narrative and non-fiction projects. She is an award-winning filmmaker who crafts the look and feel of every production and who leads the team in the field and in the studio. Her curiosity about different cultures and the natural world influences her artistry no matter where a production may take her. Devon is a Fellow and Board Member of The Explorers Club where she collaborates with some of the most accomplished explorers around the world and also mentors those who are up and coming. Devon received her MFA in Film and Television Production from the USC Graduate School of Cinematic Arts and her BA in International Relations and Languages at Johns Hopkins University. Devon’s narrative short film, “Dance With Me” has received international acclaim and distribution, winning the prestigious Ciné Golden Eagle award. In 2010 she was named a “top ten up and coming director” by the Los Angeles County Museum of Arts.

Sophia Michelen

Sophia Michelen has long-held a deep curiosity to explore the world through art, history and culture – aspects that have ignited her passion in photojournalism and cultural anthropology. As a first-generation American, passing stories from generation to generation is a driving thread in the fabric of her life. Her desire to collect and document her own lived experience has shaped both her personal and professional life. While she began her career in neurobiology and public health, it was her passion for international relations that led her to live, work, and travel to over 70 countries in 6 continents throughout her twenties. Sophia is a fearless explorer who has ventured to remote locations across the globe from trekking in Eastern Africa and dog sledding in the Arctic circle, to sailing the Nile River and hiking the jungles of Southeast Asia. Through every frontier experience, Sophia immerses herself into the culture and history of each location she visits, giving her a comprehensive perspective for understanding the present time. This propels her enthusiasm for cultural preservation through storytelling and photojournalism. Sophia’s work has been published in Forbes, National Geographic Traveller, Ms. Magazine, Teen Vogue, amongst others, and has been featured in exhibitions at Harvard University and the International Center of Photography in New York. Currently, she serves as the Chair of the Women’s Committee at The Explorers Club where she is a member.

Tia Clark

Raised in a Gullah Geechee family in the heart of downtown Charleston, South Carolina, Tia Clark has lived next to the water her entire life, but she never touched the ocean or visited the river near her home. She was unaware of her ancestors’ fishing and crabbing traditions and the bounty of the waterways around her. When Tia’s cousin invited her to go out on the Ashely River to go crabbing in the same way their West African ancestors had decades before them, it was a revelation. The moment she pulled up her first crabbing basket and saw one of her favorite foods, a beautifully colored Atlantic blue crab munching on her bait. She fell in love with the water, the outdoors, and with crabbing. In 2017, Tia started an Airbnb experience called “Casual Crabbing with Tia” for fun to share her love of her experience with others. Before long, this guided crabbing and fishing experience was recognized as one of Airbnb’s top five best experiences in the world with only 5-star reviews (over 600 of them!) – and she continues to attract locals, tourists, and celebrities alike to her dock. Tia has become an ambassador for her Gullah Gechee culture. Tia is not only the “Crabbin’ Queen” of her hometown, but she is also a leader in coastal protection through her work with conservation groups, the Charleston Waterkeeper, as well as schools and youth organizations. Tia leads marsh and oyster restoration projects and has recently been named to the Marine Advisory Committee by the State of South Carolina.

Alicia Albee

Alicia Albee, Executive Producer of World Life Productions is in charge of the ultimate success of each production –start to finish. From scuba diving and mountain climbing to navigating an edit suite, she brings her grit and zeal to everything that WLP produces. Starting with the development phase of each project Alicia then leads pre-production, produces and oversees field and post production and monitors story and deliverables all the way through to delivery of the project. For each project, Alicia ensures that WLP is producing and delivering quality material on time and within budget. Alicia started her career in New York City over 25 years ago and found her true passion in documentary storytelling—work she values as an opportunity to make
a difference in the world. In addition to producing all WLP projects to date, she also has produced content for NOAA’s Climate Resilience Toolkit and President Obama’s Climate Action Plan with the mission to empower communities with tools and information for better climate resilience. Alicia is a member of The Explorers Club with a passion for Conservation.
