Closing out World Oceans Week, The Explorers Club is hosting a special and captivating event with the team from the Endurance22 Expedition, which discovered Shackleton’s lost ship Endurance in 2022. The ship had not been seen since it was crushed by the ice and sank in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica in 1915.
We’ll hear first-hand from Expedition Leader Dr John Shears, Chief Scientist Dr Lasse Rabenstein, and Subsea Manager Nico Vincent as they recount how they used pioneering science and technology to make their historic discovery, and tell us how they managed to survey, photograph, and film one of the most famous ships in history at a depth of 3008m below the ice. The team will be introduced by Donald Lamont, Chairman of the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust, which organised and funded the expedition.
The Endurance22 expedition brought together world-leading subsea engineers, technicians, scientists and mariners on the South African icebreaker SA Agulhas II, one of the largest and most modern polar research vessels in the world. Join us for what will undoubtedly be an incredible story from the dedicated experts who have been involved in this monumental discovery and learn first-hand of the challenges of undertaking an international expedition of this magnitude and significance.
Check-in begins at 4:30PM and the program will start at 5:00PM.
Following the presentations, the Explorers Club will host a drink reception in the Club Library.
