LOWELL THOMAS AWARDS DINNER 2003

The dinner was presented by The President, Directors, and Officers of The Explorers Club, and Rolex Watch USA Inc., on October 25th, 2003 in the Delegates Dining Room at United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Carrying the theme, "The Future of Exploration: A Global Challenge", the awards dinner honored six men and women who have been inspired by legendary explorers--in several instances, by their own parents or grandparents--and who now, in their own right, are shaping the future of exploration.

  • Brent Bishop, son of legendary American mountaineer Barry Bishop, has tirelessly campaigned for mountain stewardship in the High Himalaya and Karakorum ranges.
  • Bjørn Heyerdahl, a native of South Africa, is continuing his grandfather Thor Heyerdahl’s quest for sustainable lifeways through his Midgard Expedition, which seeks to build a better world by learning from those who live in harmony with nature.
  • Louise Leakey is carrying on in the paleoanthropological footsteps of her grandparents Louis and Mary Leakey, who first shared with the world the fossil wonders of Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge, and those of her parents, Richard and Meave Leakey, whose work in the Turkana Basin she first witnessed as an infant.
  • Peter Hillary, son of Explorers Club Honorary Chairman Sir Edmund Hillary, has taken up his father’s passion for the mountains, summited Everest twice, and is working to improve the lives of the Himalayan people, primarily in Nepal.
  • David Stuart, whose decipherment of ancient Maya inscriptions has taken the archaeological world by storm, first took to the field as a toddler, accompanying his parents, George and Gene Stuart, on their National Geographic-sponsored Mesoamerican expeditions.
  • Scott Lindgren, who with a team of the world’s foremost kayakers recently undertook the first descent of Tibet’s deadly Tsangpo Gorge, considered the Everest of rivers.

The Lowell Thomas Award is presented by the President of The Explorers Club to groups of explorers who have distinguished themselves through exceptional work in the field.

The Co-Chairs for the 2003 Lowell Thomas Awards Dinner were Angela and Carl Schuster.
