SPECIAL EVENTS
Explorers Club Annual Dinner 2006

about this year's theme

What's Left to Explore? A few steps into the new millennium and The Explorers Club's second century, we are finding the answer is: Just about everything. Our members are renowned for many “famous firsts” of the last century, including the expeditions to the geographic poles, the highest mountain peak, the deepest ocean depth, and the moon. These were a great start.

Now we are going everywhere beyond and between. The world of outer space remains largely unknown. The inner space of Earth's oceans beckons us to a world largely unexplored. And the inner space of the earth itself, the soil beneath our feet, has revealed a stratum of microscopic life we are only beginning to understand.

The tectonic shifts of planetary development and the evolution of our biosphere and cultural ethnosphere call forth a ceaseless cycle of exploration and discovery. And new technologies allow previously explored areas to be seen in a new light.

Even in the traditional early regions of exploration--the poles, the world's great mountains, the ocean's surface--today's explorers are revealing new crossings, new ascents, new paths, and new perspectives on terrain we thought we knew before.

What's left? Everything we learn to see with new eyes, and everything beyond and between.
