RESEARCH COLLECTIONS

Dorthea Sartain, Ph.D., C.A., has been appointed Curator of Archives, Collections and Books. She is a graduate of Reed College in Portland, Oregon and received her Ph.D. from Kings College, Cambridge. Dr. Sartain, a Certified Archivist, comes to The Explorers Club from Trinity Church on Wall Street, whose archives are among the very oldest and most extensive in the city. She took up her new duties on February 25, 2008.

Holdings
The library's holdings include manuscripts, film, photographs, more than 15,000 books, and 5000 maps. The main subject areas represented are science and scientific investigation, terrestrial exploration in the 19th and 20th centuries, and Explorers Club members.

Rules for Use of Collections and Facilities
Visitors must comply with all Library rules, written or otherwise. Materials do not circulate; researchers are supervised at all times; unprocessed materials are not available for research; undirected/casual surveys of Club materials are not permitted.
