By Lutz Kleveman
Review by Club staff Jeff Stolzer Rudyard Kipling, in his 1901 novel, Kim, coined the term "Great Game" to describe the 19th century imperial competition between Great Britain and Russia for dominance in Central Asia. Now, over a century later, a new "Great Game" is playing out in the region according to Lutz Kleveman, a German journalist who journeyed there recently for this comprehensive, eyewitness report. The stakes in the modern game are much higher, because the Caspian Sea contains the world’s largest untapped oil and gas reserves, and the competition to build pipelines to get these resources to market has turned the former Soviet republics of the region into bloody battlegrounds. Kleveman traveled to all the countries in the area, meeting key players in politics and the energy business and observing firsthand the devastating consequences of the struggle that is playing out between the United States, Russia, Iran and China. The panorama he creates is not a pretty one: there is ecological disaster, rampant corruption, political manipulation and wide-scale human misery. But it is a picture that cannot be ignored, because it provides an important context for the recent military forays of the United States in Afghanistan and Iraq. Kleveman’s final chapter, about the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 in the context of this new "Great Game", provides a chilling and insightful coda to a fascinating and gripping book.
