BIOBLITZ Central Park BioBlitz 2006 Survey Results The 2006 BioBlitz was conducted in New York City's Central Park from June 23 at 12:00noon to June 24 at 12:00noon, with a six-hour break from 11:00pm to 5:00am. The data gathered by the BioBlitz scientists, naturalists, and volunteers has yielded the identification of 479 species to date. While this is, of course, only a fraction of the total number of species of plants and animals whose natural habitat is New York City's Central Park, the data is concrete and is confirmed through analysis and thus yields a wealth of pieces of the Park's biological puzzle. In the words of Gary Lincoff of the fungi team, "A BioBlitz, like a mushroom foray, is a one-time collection of an area, a snap shot, as it were, of what's there at a particular time." Data on tardigrades and microorganisms is still being processed. SPECIES OBSERVED AND IDENTIFIED CATEGORY NO. Teams used CyberTrackers to electronically input and send data, live from the field, and BioBlitz technicians at North Meadow Recreation Center sorted and mapped the results. Maps like the one pictured below will be used by City of New York Parks & Recreation and their partners to better understand species quantities and location and to better control invasive species.
