BIOBLITZ
Central Park BioBlitz 2006

Friday June 23, 12noon—Saturday June 24, 12noon

The 2006 Central Park BioBlitz was launched at the Dana Discovery Center in New York City's Central Park at 12:00noon, June 23. Speakers included the eminent biologist Dr. Edward O. Wilson, President Daniel A. Bennett of The Explorers Club, New York City Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, and other special guests.

Following the opening ceremony, specialized teams of scientists, naturalists, and volunteers set out to explore Central Park in a two-day inventory of the Park's living organisms.

Results
The data gathered by the Central Park BioBlitz 2006 scientists, naturalists, and volunteers has yielded the identification of 479 species to date. While this is, of course, only a fraction of the total number of species of plants and animals whose natural habitat is New York City's Central Park, the data is concrete and is confirmed through analysis and thus yields a wealth of pieces of the Park's biological puzzle.

Goals and Methods
The BioBlitz enhances public awareness about biodiversity in an urban environment and helps the City of New York Parks & Recreation and their partners track species quantities and location within the Park. In all, over 200 volunteers, naturalists, and scientists combed the park, identifying species and collecting limited samples. Enjoy our slideshow of photos from the field.

Speakers and Sponsors
The 2006 BioBlitz was presented and sponsored by The Explorers Club, EO Wilson Biodiversity Foundation, and Neil Patterson Productions and hosted by City of New York Parks & Recreation, Central Park Conservancy, and Urban Park Rangers in cooperation with our esteemed partners and sponsors. Enjoy our slideshow of photos from the opening ceremony.
