CHAPTER MEETING/PROGRAM SCHEDULE

The Philadelphia Chapter of the Explorers' Club hosts numerous activities of interest throughout the year, including lectures and outings at venues throughout the Delaware Valley. Many events are open to those of the public who have an interest in science and exploration. Click on past chapter meetings at the left for summaries of the last year's meetings.

SPRING 2006


On Thursday, May 18, 2006 at 6:00 pm members and guests will join the Philadelphia Safari & Conservation Club to hear Tweed Roosevelt (Teddy Roosevelt's great-grandson) give a presentation titled "THEODORE ROOSEVELT AND THE RIVER OF DOUBT". Tweed retraced his forefather's near-fatal 1912 expedition down the then-unmapped Amazon. Facing the perils of the jungle, tropical disease and hostile natives, Tweed's modern recreation of his great grandfather's journey remained fraught with danger.

On Wednesday, May 24, 2006 Stevie Smith will present "PEDALING TO HAWAII: A HUMAN-POWERED ODYSSEY". Stevie Smith, the first person to attempt a "human-powered" trip around the world, was an out-of-shape, inexperienced and broke young bureaucrat who decided to circumnavigate the globe by bicycle, pedal boat and in-line skates. After three years of preparation, he and his traveling companion set out to do the unthinkable.

Smith will describe his amazing journey, drawing on his recently published account, "PEDALING TO HAWAII" (The Countryman Press). A reception will follow, sponsored by The Philadelphia Chapter of the Explorers Club.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE: CANOE THE DELAWARE WATER GAP
When: Fri.-Sun, June 2-4, 2006
Where: Branchville, NJ
Fee: $40 canoe rental
Free camping in shared cabins
Food - TBD

This event is co-sponsored by Bill Thomas (FN'89) and the Montclair State School of Conservation. On Saturday, canoe the Delaware River, followed by a group cookout and presentation by Joel Fogel (MN'73) on "Riding the Dragon's Back," recounting his role in the first descent of China's Yangtze River.

Cabins available Friday and Saturday nights. Families and friends are welcome.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS MAY 25.
We must give the outfitter a head count to determine how many canoes will be required. Payment can be made on the day of the event.
