Exploration IQ Revealed

IQ

Once again, the combination of questions proved to be daunting for readers. Though many respondents knew where the world’s three highest tides are found or which European capitals begin with the letter “B,” none were also able to name two pets that served as mascots on famous expeditions.

1. Where are the world’s three highest tides to be found?
According to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the highest tide is the Bay of Fundy at 38.4 feet. Second highest is Leaf Lake, Ungava Bay, Quebec, Canada, at 32.0 feet. And third highest is the Port of Bristol in the United Kingdom at 31.5 feet.

2. Name at least two pets that served as mascots on famous expeditions.
Mrs. Chippy was a tabby cat aboard Shackleton’s Endurance. Despite the name, he was a tomcat from Glasgow who belonged to Henry McNish, the ship’s carpenter. Seaman was the Newfoundland that accompanied Lewis and Clark. Lewis purchased the dog for $20 in 1803. Though not a member of any expedition, Shredder is the resident feline in the archives of The Explorers Club headquarters.

3. Name the six European capitals that begin with the letter “B.”
John Malone correctly pointed out that there are actually seven capitals. In alphabetical order, the capitals are Belgrade, Berlin, Bern, Bratislava, Brussels, Bucharest, and Budapest. Several respondents submitted Belfast (for Northern Ireland), but, unfortunately, it is not a national capital, as it is part of the United Kingdom.
