Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if I haven't climbed Mt. Everest or discovered the Titanic?

A: Many of our members have contributed to field science and exploration in much less remote and dangerous ways. A field study of butterflies here in New York or a recording bird migration data on the nearby Long Island seashore qualifies you for membership just as much as collecting data from the top of the highest peaks or the oceans' deepest depths.

Q: What if I don't have any field experience at all?

A: We are always looking for individuals who share our goals and interests, and we are willing to support them through participation and association at the Friends level. We hope that, through your association with the members of our Club, you may complete fieldwork that would qualify you for membership.

Q: I don't know anyone to sponsor me for membership. How do I find a sponsor?

A: Our Membership Services Office is more than happy to put you in contact both with the chapter in your area as well as with members with similar interests who may be willing to sponsor you. Please feel free to contact us via email at coordinator@explorers.org.

Q: How expensive is membership?

A: The varying categories of membership have different levels of financial commitment. New York members, as they have the greatest access to events and activities, pay a higher annual fee than our members who live in Katmandu. Please see Membership Dues.

Q: How many chapters are in The Explorers Club, and where are they located?

A: We have twenty active chapters in the United States and eight international chapters. Please look at our chapters page for further information and links to chapter websites and events.
