A fantastic Lowell Thomas Awards weekend has been capped with a wonderful gallery featured inside the Metropolitan / NY Regional Section of the Oct. 21 Sunday New York Times. NYT Photographer Christopher Lane visited the Club throughout the Awards weekend (Oct. 12-14th), capturing some of the people and places that make this organization so special. The photo spread and accompanying online gallery features President Alan Nichols FN ’84, alongside such fellow luminaries as Don Walsh Medalist ’61, Brian P. Hanson Medalist ’84, Lee Langan FN ’99, Rodney Hilton Brown MN ’02, Thomas W. Bachert ME ’57, Bertrand Piccard FI ’00, Bettina H. E. Heyerdahl MI ’94, Capt. Norman L. Baker FN ’70, Fritz Selby FE ’88 and David Holmes SM ‘08.
The story describes the crowd at both the “Exploring Legends” and LTAD events, “as if a cocktail party of the Royal Geographic Society [sic] had been transported to present day New York from Edwardian London. In the wood-paneled library, an American marine biologist traded business cards with a German mountain climber, and a Norwegian polar explorer sipped wine across the room from a man who rescued the remains of soldiers missing since World War II from the icy depths of Greenland’s glaciers.”
While not entirely representative of our 22 percent female membership, the photo spread and accompanying text goes a long way towards communicating TEC’s core values.
