Time:

Description:

Join Mr. Waterston and Mr. Simon as they update listeners on the myriad of serious threats endangering the welfare of our oceans. The recent Deepwater Horizon oil spill tragedy in the Gulf will undoubtedly be heavily featured, with an update on how much damage is being done to the Gulf and the wildlife it harbors. An outline will be given on Oceana’s response to this tragedy, with notes on opposition to new oil drilling and the endorsement of offshore wind as an alternative energy source.

Additionally, the large role that the oceans play in regulating the earth’s temperature and the increasing and alarming level of consequent ocean acidification will be discussed, along with the solution that Oceana proposes to combat this problem.

Sam Waterston: Mr. Waterston has played an active role in saving the oceans since joining Oceana in May of 2007. Previously, Mr. Waterston served on Oceana’s Ocean Council, along with a select group of academic, business, policy and philanthropic leaders. Born in Cambridge Massachusetts in 1940, Mr. Waterston’s father was a language teacher while his mother was a landscape painter. He attended preparatory school Brooks and Gorton before earning a scholarship to Yale University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. Later that year, Mr. Waterston made his New York debut at the Phoenix Theater in “Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama’s Hung You in the Closet” and “I’m Feelin’ So Sad.”

Over the next four decades, Mr. Waterston’s career goes on to include a plethora of film and television credits as well as repeated returns to the stage. His trophy case includes television awards such as the Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild, and theater awards like the OBIE and Drama Desk awards. Other accolades include an Academy Award nomination for his role as journalist Sydney Schanberg in 1984’s “The Killing Fields” and six Emmy Award nominations for his roles in “I’ll Fly Away” and “Law & Order.”

Jim Simon: Jim is the Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Oceana. His legal practice of almost 20 years has focused on the environment and natural resources, including marine resources. He has held leadership positions in nonprofit and government, and he has advised businesses on strategy and operations. Prior to joining Oceana, Mr. Simon was a business consultant with McKinsey & Company in Washington, DC from 2001 through 2003. From 1994 through 2000, Mr. Simon was Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the US Department of Justice. In that position, he supervised several sections of attorneys handling enforcement and Defensive Cases on behalf of the United States, as well as legislation, policy and international matters. From 1987 to 1993, Mr. Simon was a senior attorney in the New York office of Natural Resources Defense Council, where he directed a group handling litigation throughout the country and coordinated NRDC’s national water/marine program. From 1983 to 1987, Mr. Simon represented the City of New York in state and federal court as an Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Affirmative Litigation Division of the city’s Law Department. Mr. Simon holds a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Law Review, and bachelor of arts in English from Yale.
