Dr. Christoph Baumer, FI 04, has so far led five international archaeological expeditions into the Taklamakan Desert in north-western China. He is, next to two Chinese archaeologists, the living explorer having visited and documented most archaeological sites in the Taklamakan, of which he discovered three in the last few years. These sites witness the existence of “Silk and Jade Road” trade routes 2000 to 4000 years old.
In his lecture, UNVEILED SECRETS OF THE TAKLAMAKAN DESERT, CHINA, Christoph Baumer will report on the archaeological results from his winter 2009 expedition into the heart of the Taklamakan Desert. There he discovered an unknown Iron Age graveyard indicating links to nomadic steppe cultures much further north and a also a Bronze Age necropolis which revealed a surprising fertility cult and a 4000 years old unknown archaeological horizon. The naturally mummified corpses bore clear Indo-European traits.
Dr. Baumer is the author of several books and contributions published in 23 languages. They focus at archaeological discoveries along Eastern Central Asia, at autochthonous cultures of Tibet, at very early Christianity in Central Asia and China as well as at the sources of Chinese Buddhism. Baumer is President of the Society for the Exploration of EurAsia, Fellow of the Explorers Club, Royal Geographic Society, Royal Asiatic Society and Royal Society for Asian Affairs, London. He lives in Hergiswil, Switzerland.
