A native of South Africa, James Currie has led wildlife and bird watching tours for over 12 years.
His passion for birding and remote cultures has taken him to far corners of the earth from the Amazon and Australia to Africa and Madagascar. Whether trawling the pine flat-woods of Florida for the rare Red-cockaded Woodpecker or creeping through the undergrowth of rain forest in Madagascar in search of bizarre Ground-rollers, his passion is contagious.
Currie created Birding Adventures TV, the first series to focus adventure bird watching. Each program has a strong conservation message and highlights the importance and urgency of preserving the planet’s incredible birdlife. For the Explorers Club, James will describe a recent adventure in Colombia where his crew captured on video what may be an entirely new species of hummingbird. Initially identified as the long-lost Bogota Sunangel, this mysterious hummingbird has captivated the birding world. James will give us an update on DNA tests, and provide tips on hotspots where you can see the most interesting bird behavior.
Currie has contributed to several publications, including the acclaimed Southern African Birdfinder. He is also an expert in the field of sustainable development and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in African Languages and a Masters degree in Sustainable Environmental Management. His dissertation received a distinction and has been used as a model for assessing the relationships between wildlife areas and local communities. James presented his dissertation to the Icelandic Government in 2001. One of his passions is forging links between local communities, wildlife and international travelers. From 2004-2007 James worked as the Managing Director of Africa Foundation, a non-profit organization that directs its efforts towards the upliftment of communities surrounding wildlife areas in Africa.
He will also share his experiences filming both Birding Adventures TV and his newest project “Aerial Assassins" for National Geographic.
