Exploration, and the tales that flow from its pursuit, are a special part of our quest for the unknown. The Explorers Club, in its mission to further the field of exploration, is proud to bring together today an internationally renowned and award winning authors to share with us their stories of the challenges faced by those who ventured into the unknown—


• “Alone On The Ice: The Greatest Survival Story in the History of Exploration” – David Roberts is the winner of the Prix Mediterrané and the grand prize at the Banff Mountain Book Festival. His book documents the harrowing journey of Douglas Mawson’s Australian Antarctic Expedition and its survival in the face of disastrous losses.

• “The Vast Unknown: The First American Ascent of Everest” – Best-selling author Broughton Coburn offers a sneak preview of his book about a true tale of six climbers who challenged the Himalaya in 1963.

• “From Rutkiewicz to Kaltenbrunner: Tales of Tragedy and Triumph from the Women of K2” – Jennifer Jordan, author of Savage Summit: The First Five Women of K2, will examine the history of the Savage Mountain through the female pioneers who reached its summit.
4:00 - 5:00 pm


• “Danger and Desire on the Savage Mountain” – Freelance writer Chip Brown will tell the story of the International 2011 K2 North Pillar Expedition, the subject of a National Geographic feature in 2012. Brown has written for over 30 national magazines, is a Contributing Writer for National Geographic and is author of Good Morning, Midnight, about Guy Waterman, a former political and corporate speechwriter turned dean of the homesteading movement in rural Vermont.

• “From Makalu to Vinson: Climbing in the 21st Century” – Robert Anderson: mountain guide, Everest summiteer, television contributor and author, will discuss the challenges of Antarctic climbing and his recent ascent of Makalu.

• “No Way Down: Life and Death on K2” – New York Times Afghanistan correspondent Graham Bowley—who has had numerous assignments in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan and authored a New York Times bestseller about K2, No Way Down—will discuss the challenges facing K2 climbers.
