Body painting is one of the oldest art forms in Africa. Evidence of its origins is found in the early African cave paintings and rock engravings dating back to the Stone Age. Using the skin as a canvas and the earth as a palette, body painting is performed not only for decoration, but to convey messages of availability, status, and position in society. The designs come from ancient sources, the paint from nature, and the colors are often associated with the ancestral world. The art of body painting is a celebration – life-affirming, transforming, spontaneous, and a signature of being alive.
For thirty years, American-born Carol Beckwith and Australian Angela Fisher have been documenting the fast-disappearing, traditional cultures of Africa. Since their original meeting in Kenya, the two photographers have travelled over 270,000 miles through forty countries and encountered more than 150 African cultures.
