The next meeting of the George Rogers Clark Chapter of The Explorers Club will be on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the home of Cindy Arnett.
Our speaker will be Jane Slater who will speak about bats!
Jane points out some interesting facts about bats to wet any explorer's interest:
· Bats belong to their own order (chiroptera), which is the second largest order of mammals with upwards of 1200 species.
· More than two-thirds of bats eat insects - a single little brown bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquito-sized insects in a single hour! A small percentage of bats actually eat mice, fish, frogs, or other small vertebrates!
· Bats come in a variety of sizes ranging from the bumblebee bat that weighs less than a penny, to giant flying foxes that have six-foot wingspans!
Jane will also address the issue of White Nose Syndrome (WNS), a disease that has recently killed around 6 million North American bats. She will share some of the latest findings about this important issue.
Cindy's address is 910 McBurney Drive, Lebanon, Ohio 45036. We will gather at 6:30 pm for dinner and fellowship followed by our guest speaker. The cost of the evening will be $45 which will be collected at the door. Please RSVP to me a soon as possible so that dinner arrangements may be finalized.
