The George Rogers Clark Chapter of the Explorers Club Meeting
Speakers: Rebecca Elefante and Bob Thobaben - Bird Banding
Joe Bertolini - Dam Tour
Dr. Jim Pisarowicz - Dark Life
Topic: A Day a Caesar Creek Lake - Birding, Engineering, Cave Exploration, and History
Our March event will be at the Caesar Creek Lake Visitor Center in Waynesville, Ohio. We will start off the day with a winter bird banding demonstration sponsored by the Ohio Bird Banding Association working in conjunction with the US Army Corps of Engineers at the Caesar Creek Lake. The demonstrations will feature live birds. Various trapping methods will be employed to show how birds are caught and safely removed from nets and traps, data will gathered and the birds then will be released unharmed back into the wild. We will learn about bird migration, ecology, and bird conservation plus see various local birds up close. Park Ranger Rebecca Elefante and Master Bird Bander Bob Thobaben will be hosting this part of the day's event.
Next Park Manager Joe Bertolini will lead us on a tour of the control Tower at Caesar Creek Lake. Caesar Creek Lake is a flood control lake and the Tower is the working part of the dam which created the lake. The Tower holds the mechanical and electrical equipment which allows the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to control the water levels on Caesar Creek Lake. Tours of the Tower are very limited since the events of 9/11, so this is a very special opportunity to see the operating part of Caesar Creek Lake Dam.
Lunch will be provided and the lunch presentation will be by Clark Chapter Secretary-Treasurer Dr. Jim Pisarowicz on the discovery, exploration, and scientific investigation of Cueva de Villa Luz located in Tabasco, Mexico. Villa Luz contains toxic gases, dripping sulfuric acid, and a sci-fi ecosystem which may provide the model for the search for life on other planets. One on-line science abstracting service called the discoveries made in Villa Luz the most radical scientific discoveries of 1999. There is also a possibility of several of the Dr. Pisarowicz's colleagues on this research project may be on hand including the Philadelphia Chapter's president Doug Soroka, and Texas Chapter member Dr. Louise Hose.
After lunch there will be an "on your own" exploration of Pioneer Village just a short drive from the Caesar Creek Lake Visitor Center. Caesar's Creek Pioneer Village is a living history museum promoting early life in southwestern Ohio. The site is open daily for self-guided tours but the homes and other structures themselves are only open during scheduled events. Be sure to dress according to the weather for this part of the day's activities.
