As the world's largest "island"—and the only country to span an entire continent—Australia, together with New Zealand, certainly has its fair share of explorers! The history of exploration and our pioneering spirit is still strongly ablaze today. The Australia - New Zealand Chapter of The Explorers Club (ANZEC) represents this vibrant spirit: a focus to bring together our exceptional men and women who are pioneers in their field, leading the world into uncharted territories.
As a quick cross-section of our membership reveals, while we may be hidden down underneath the globe, our members have definitely left their mark on the world stage and continue to do so! Sir Edmund Hillary — Who was The Explorers Club’s honorary chair — was of course one of our members, along with other current greats including Dick Smith and Bill McGrath. Tim Jarvis broke the record for the world's fastest unsupported ski journey to the South Pole; Dr. Ann McFarlane has been involved with excavations of Old Kingdom sites in Egypt for over 25 years; and ANZEC Chairman Chris Bray — the club’s youngest Fellow at 25 — recently returned from completing a two-man, world-first 75-day unsupported expedition across a largely unexplored island in the Arctic with member Clark Carter.
This is but a sample of our over 50 members, every one of whom has exceptional tales to tell, tips, ideas, and experiences to pass on, and a true passion for life. The Australia-New Zealand Chapter exists to foster this passion and to encourage others to get out there and give it a go.
