REPORT—YOUTH ACTIVITY FUND
A Study on Leopard Lizards of Rinconada Canyon

2004
By Jeff LeVan

Expedition Members:
Jeff LeVan

Introduction
I spent 100.75 hours in the field this summer searching for leopard lizards (Gambelia wislizenii) in and around Rinconada Canyon, located in Petroglyph National Monument near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Out of seventy-four total captures, fifty different leopard lizards were marked during the study. Thirty-four of the lizards were captured just once. Twenty-five female lizards were captured, in comparison to twenty-three males. Two hatchling lizards were too small to accurately sex. This data reveals that the number of male and female G. wislizenii within Rinconada is probably roughly equal.

The average snout to vent length for male leopard lizards was 88.6 mm, and the average weight was 20.9 grams. The average snout to vent length for female leopard lizards was 97.6 mm, and the average weight was 29.2 grams. These values are significantly smaller than the values obtained by Mitchell (1984) who found males to average 95.8 mm SVL and weigh 25.8 grams in his study site in southeastern Arizona. Mitchell also obtained average values of 110.3 mm SVL and 47.0 grams for female leopard lizards.
