REPORT—YOUTH ACTIVITY FUND
Effects of University Education on Urban Migration Patterns in Benin, West Africa

Introduction
The purpose of my fieldwork in Benin was to study the effects of university education on the urban migration patterns in that country. This topic was chosen due to the unique characteristics of the educational system; the fact that up until 2003 there was just one university in the entire country, located in the major coastal city of Cotonou. In late 2003 an additional campus was created in the northern city of Parakou. The result of this situation has been that young people who receive high marks on the entrance exams to university must, in many cases, leave their families and kinship networks in the villages and move to the urban areas. My study focused on participant observation and interviews as a source of data collection.
