FLAG 51
Eighth Summit: Expedition to the Watkins Mountains, Greenland

May 1—23, 2005
Neil Laughton MI'03

Expedition Members:
Neil Laughton MI'03—Expedition Leader
James Balfour
Stephen Jones
Giles Leather

Introduction
The two aims of the expedition were to make a number of first ascents of unclimbed mountains in the Watkins Mountains in Greenland in the area of 69° North and 029° West and to climb Gunnbjørn Fjeld, 3,673 m, the highest peak in the Arctic. The subsidiary objectives were to share the considerable expedition experience of the organisers Neil Laughton and Stephen Jones with less experienced mountaineers and for Neil Laughton to climb the highest peak in the Arctic—the eighth summit when added to his list of the Seven Summits, the highest summit on each continent.

The expedition team of Neil Laughton, Stephen Jones, Giles Leather and James Balfour between them made the first ascents of thirteen previously unclimbed peaks and made an ascent of Gunnbjørn Fjeld. This was the first ascent of the season.phenomenon.
