| Detailed Description: | Felipe Fern?ndez-Armesto, author of the new book, PATHFINDERS: A Global History of Exploration, will lecture on one of the greatest stories of all time: the story of how, despite an abundance of seemingly insurmountable barriers, human curiosity, ingenuity, and ambition forged the very world in which we live today.
Presenting the subject of exploration for the first time on a truly global scale, Fern?ndez-Armesto will describe the pathfinders who, over the last five millennia, laid down the routes of contact that have drawn together the farthest reaches of the world. From the maritime explorations connecting Queen Hatshepsut’s Egypt to the exotic land of Punt in the second millennium BCE, through the merchants and missionaries of the ancient Silk Roads and the great Iberian explorers of the fifteenth century, to the nineteenth-century explorations of the polar regions, interior Africa, North America, and the South Pacific, Fern?ndez-Armesto will spin a grand narrative full of character and story. Skillfully embedding these explorations in the cultures, politics, and technologies of their times, he will describe this history with an unusual depth and breadth that will interest everyone from the true scholar to the lifelong student.
