| Detailed Description: | NASA’s Memo stated: "Join us as we set forth on a journey that will mark the beginning of an expanded human presence in the solar system."
Now who in The Explorers Club could turn that down?
Using a hot air balloon hovering over lava fields in the Mojave Desert with a FLIR Infrared camera and a bunch of elementary and high school teachers sounds like an interesting way for NASA to conduct analogs for human exploration research to look for caves on Mars. However it worked.
The people that will walk on the surface of Mars are in school right now.
NASA’s Spaceward Bound’s mission is: To train the next generation of space explorers by having students and teachers participate in the exploration of scientifically interesting remote and extreme environments on Earth, as analogs for human exploration of the Moon and Mars.
Tonight The Explorers Club invites you on a journey to look for caves utilizing state of the art infrared technology with Jim Thompson FN'05, a lifetime member of the National Speleological Society. A journey that began at Carlsbad Caverns and Mammoth Cave, traveled to Greece and ended up in the Atacama and Mojave deserts on scientific expeditions to research locating caves on Mars, with NASA Scientists and school teachers.
The use of infrared in exploration is in it’s infancy. Jim Thompson is a pioneer in this field of research and will demonstrate analog research he is currently conducting with NASA to locate caves on Mars from his hot air balloon, Flourish.
Finding caves on Mars is possibly a key to finding water and even life on our planet’s closest neighbor.
Infrared uses in other areas of exploration will also be discussed.
Our speaker, Jim Thompson, was recently appointed Vice Chairman of the Southwest Florida Chapter of The Explorers Club.
