Southwest Florida Chapter

The Southwest Florida Chapter of The Explorers Club is proud of its heritage and provides a venue for explorers visiting and living in the Naples area, known as the magic Kingdom by those who have come to know and love it. We have six to seven meetings a year, October through March. At least five of these meetings are lectures at the Southwest Florida Gulf Coast University Renaissance Center in downtown Naples, held at 6:30pm on the first Thursday of each month during the lecture season. We have been fortunate to present several world class speakers, including Diana Udel and Connie Bransilver. Each year we attempt to have one off site holiday bash—the one last season took place deep in the Everglades at Ngala (the place of the lion), in a jungle setting with live African animals. An anonymous donor regaled us with quality wines from his extensive collection. Fellow explorer Douglas Seifert showed some awesome underwater photography, including prize-winning photos of the great white shark.

One of the most popular meetings was presented by explorer Margaret Lowman (Canopy Meg), a vice president and board member of The Explorers Club. Her exploits high in the jungle canopy provided many of us with another view of the jungle and the ecosystem that exists there. Explorers Herb and Ann Rowe showed the wonders of the arctic during their voyage to the North Pole on the Russian atomic icebreaker Yamal. We closed out the season with a superb presentation and film by explorer Gary Bowersox. Gary has been in Afghanistan each year for the past 32 years. His film about Afghanistan was like something out of Indiana Jones. His visits to the ancient mines that are thousands of years old and hidden high in the mountains of Afghanistan brought him in contact with the tribal leaders of the Northern Alliance.

For each of the past five years our chapter has been able to provide three $1000 scholarships to deserving college students working on projects that emphasize the field sciences. Each of the students presented their findings at one of the lecture meetings. We continue to try and find ways to support this worthwhile program. We are organized as a 501 C (3) nonprofit organization, which saves us a few dollars on taxes and allows us to receive donations.

We already have speakers for our forthcoming season which is expected to challenge the wonderful year just completed. We love visitors so come on down and visit.
