Philadelphia Chapter

Meet the Philadelphia Chapter of The Explorers Club
The City of Brotherly Love is home to a large and active chapter of The Explorers Club. The chapter was established in 1967. Founding members include Brother Nicholas Sullivan, PhD MED'65 and John Levinson, MD FE'66, both of whom went on to serve terms as president of The Explorers Club. Today the chapter has approximately 115 active members, and many of its members continue to play active roles in Club leadership. Currently, R. Scott Winters, PhD FN'92 is a member of the board of directors (class of 2007).

Drawing a diverse membership
Members hail from throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware, and those parts of New Jersey that are not within a 50-mile radius of New York City. With its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the chapter counts a high number of noted underwater explorers among its ranks, including experts in sharks, shipwrecks, sonar, and maritime law. Contrary to popular rumor, however, not all members spend their time beneath the sea. From Titanic to the top of Everest, from the North Pole to the South and on to deep space, Philadelphia Chapter members, like the Club at large, represent a wide range of interests and experiences. Dinner conversation is always enlightening.

Active at home and in the field
The chapter maintains an active schedule of dinner lectures, outings and other activities in support of exploration. It awards the Stephen Chapman-Schroe,der Scholarship and the Carl A. Harvis Scholarship and bestows its own Explorer of the Year award annually. The chapter holds most of its dinners at a private supper club overlooking historic Independence Mall. Outdoor events take place throughout the region.
